Bill,

If the team you're watching fills you with shame and regret, it must be either the UW or WSU. In that case I would say you should avoid it for the next 12 weeks. You'll surely feel a better, stronger, smarter person for it!

Ps
The shame/regret comment was in reference to food choices I've made, not one night stands as some family members may have suggested.

Sunday Morning Introduction

I guess it's my turn to introduce myself to the other contestants. Hi, my name is Stephen and I want to be the Biggest Loser! WOOO! I guess I'll go right into the questions:

1. Why are you doing this? The short answer is that I want to be in better shape. The long(er) answer is that for a while I've felt like I've been passing through the physical prime of my life and haven't been taking advantage of it. This contest will be my push to reach a higher level of physical fitness. And also I wanna win some of yall's money.

2. What do you want to achieve in the next 12 weeks? I want to develop eating and exercise habits that I can maintain. If you want some numbers, I want to lose 5 pounds.

3. What is your long-term fitness goal and how do you plan to accomplish it? I want to run a 10K in under 50 minutes (although I'm really shooting for 42-45 minutes). To get there I will be running 5 days a week without a personal trainer. Someday I will run a half marathon, but for now I think this is a much more realistic goal.

Well, that's it for me. The 'hawks start in a few minutes, so I need to get my game face on. Good luck everyone!

Colleen,

Referring to your blog, must we also give up sports??? Do I get points for not watching any sporting event other than the Badgers??

Bill

What worries you masters you.

I am completely and utterly sick of ruminating and worrying about my weight.

1- Why are you doing this?
To feel better about myself. I am not going to allow my weight to be the central issue of my life anymore. I will no longer do the things that fill me with shame and regret. I will be fit and healthy! That said, it would be super cool if a new trend of older supermodels became vogue because of me. However, that is unlikely.
Also, I like being part of a team. I feel accountable to my teammates and I like to think I might have some small part to play in someone else's success. It takes my mind off my own struggles. Plus - you guys make me laugh!

2-What do you want to achieve in the next 12 weeks?
I would like to develop a healthy style of eating that I can comfortably maintain long-term. I would also like to get to the point that exercise becomes an enjoyable part of my life, most days. Specifically, I would like to lose 20 pounds & lower my blood pressure.

3- What is your long-term fitness goal and how do you plan to accomplish it?
My fitness goal is to run 5 miles in an hour. I have a lo-ong way to go! I know that with consistent hard work I can achieve it. To that end I am committed to running 3 times a week and working with my personal trainer 2 times a week (No deduction of points dear sis! As soon as you're healthy - you're going to join me for a couple of sessions.)

Wow - this is going to take a lot of change! I am excited! Nervous but excited. I am going to go clean out my fridge and evacuate all the goodies from my cabinets. Good luck everyone!

BTW - you can load pictures onto the blog. Just thought you'd like to know. : )

Bill - I've got a 10 week - 10k training plan. It was written for runners but it doesn't matter if you run it or walk it, its based on distance. Let me know if you want me to email to you.
Sis - I've got 3# and 5# hand weights and an upper body DVD. Let me know if you want them. It might help you build a little muscle while your back continues to mend.
Lori- Apparently you walk at the same pace that I run. So sad. We should meet at Greenlake sometime.
Ben - our last Seahawk and beer day tomorrow!

Good luck everyone!

1. The main reason for joining this outstanding group is to avoid walking around Bell Square sporting an oxygen tank. As many of you know I have been blessed with some health issues that make a healthy life style essential. I always find some excuse (sorry Timbo) to make those chocolate chip cookies with a cup of butter(sorry John). It is over! No more excuses, like Bill, Jen, and Lori I too was successful with WW but unfortunately have regained 16 of the 20 lbs that I lost. I am very tired of making promises to myself and then not honoring them. Life is much too short and I want to live it with zest and vitality.

2. I liked Lori's "I will" statements I know that must be a Nike or some goal setting guru's advice to declare goals as I will statements so here I go. I will lose 12 lbs, I certainly hope to lose more but given my recent back surgery I am just not sure how much I will be able to push myself physically. By the way anyone that hires a personal trainer will be penalized 20 points! The most important goal that I have is identical to Jen's I want to eat better and have my healthy food choices be a way of life something I enjoy. I want to be fit and healthy for the rest of my life.

3. My long-term fitness goal is very difficult for me since I am not 100% after the B surgery. I am committed to working out 30 minutes a day but as far as a long term goal I hope you all will let me weigh in on that after the first month. I want to put down something that is a challenge for me but right now I have no idea what that will be. I will also commit to resistence training 3 times a week especially focusing on my core. Lastly, I will keep my sense of humor and provide all of you with words of encouragement. I can't think of a finer group of people to suffer along side.

Hi I'm Bill and I'm a Recovering Dieter!

1. My reason for doing the contest.
I could say that GQ wanted to do a lay-out of me, but I had to turn them down. However that would be fudging. A few years ago when Lori worked for NIKE I was able to run 2 miles in under 20 minutes. I also went religiously to Weight Watchers where I received my 25 pounds lost keychain as well as a refrigerator magnet. Will we be having these in this program??? I also found Blue Bunny Bars that were part of the plan. I know I need to lose the weight and with all of your encouragements I know I will be successful.

2. I hope to lose at least the 25 pounds I lost in 2001. I have too many clothes I need to fit in again.

3. My 12 week fitness goal is to walk or run in a 10 k race sometime in March. I will use the WAC's exercise facilities, especially the elliptical. I will also utilize a personal trainer for showing me how to get better flexibility and strength. I might also throw in a massage and pedicure for the metropolitan man that I am. My week's goal is to not have a drop of alcohol but instead more water. Just during Week 1!!! Not having blogged before this will make me a better communicator with the youth that I teach. I have written too much for a man. I need to finish drinking one of my last glasses of red wine.

Bill
Hello All.

From now until the end of our blog-venture, you will find my info under "Lori". The 'lorih" was set up from my work address, and I want to be able to access my account from any e-mail; thus the change. I'm sure for all of those who are far more tech-ie than me (meaning everyone else on the roster), there was a way to do this without setting up another e-mail address. Oh well, I'm nothing if not expeditious.

On to the important stuff: Why am I taking part in the Biggest Loser? I am powerfully motivated when I bear my soul to others. Whether it's weighing in at Weight Watchers or now joining this group, I find that I stick to my goal when I risk public humiliation :) A more positive way of stating this, is that there is power in sharing our dreams and goals.....

I was in the best shape of my life before I returned to Seattle five years ago. Thru exercise and my commitment to WW, I weighed somewhere between 135 and 140lbs, but more important than the weight, I was closing in on being fit. I was "powerwalking" an 11-12 minute mile, and I was exercising at least five times each week. I felt great. And then I moved to Seattle, lost my weekday walking partner and was away from Bill and Drew for almost a year. No excuse, just reality. I used all of those reasons to stop exercising, and when I stopped exercising, I stopped being careful about my food choices.

I want to feel healthy again. There is no turning back in life, and it's important that I move forward. I turned 50 this year, and I want this 50th year to be the year I take back the responsibility for my fitness and health.

My Weight-Loss Goal
I will lose 15 lbs.

My Fitness Goal
I will be able to maintain a 12-minute mile for four miles. (I will reward myself further, if I can do it in 11 minute miles).

How will I get there? I will return to the gym at least two days each week and start by using the treadmill. In addition, Reggie and I will start powerwalking two nights each week. When I am traveling, I will use the gym at my hotel at least every other day. Beyond that, I am going to work on my stomach muscles and upper body. I am tired of standing at my kitchen counter for a few hours and having a backache the remainder of the day. I have to believe this is because of my lack of stomach muscles. I will start by getting beyond the 10 sit-ups (yes, Kathy - only 10!) that I was able to do today, adding 2 more each day. Once I get myself used to a steady regimen of exercise (I figure three-four weeks), I'm going to get some personal assistance for weight training and add that to my regimen.

Wish me luck - as I do all of you! Here's to a new year, new "us" and some fun along the way!

So why am I doing this exactly?

1. Your reason for doing the contest?

You know that feeling you get when you're trying on a pair of size 8 jeans only to discover that they're just too damn big? And then the sales person has to run to find the size sixes? Me either.

My primary reason for starting the contest is weight loss. For most of my life I have hovered in a place where I haven't been "overweight" but have certainly been more chunky than I preferred. My weight has now crept back up to where it was when I started Weight Watchers four years ago and it's time to say sayonara to my extra poundage for good. I am also approaching my weight loss this time with a much more fitness-oriented approach. I want to build a healthier, stronger body and want to enjoy the process as much as possible. So, I will be focusing on exercise and whole foods. No crash dieting here!

2. What you hope to achieve in the 12 weeks?

First...the specifics: I would like to finish the contest 15 pounds lighter and able to complete my fitness challenge. I want my resting heart rate to be lowered and my blood pressure to go down.

The unmeasurables: At the end of the 12 weeks, I would like my healthy eating to be more intuitive and exercise to be an important part of my every day life.

3. Why you decided on your personal 12-week fitness goal and how you plan to accomplish it?

My goal is to run 5 miles in under 60 minutes. I believe this is the most challenging personal goal I could set that is still reachable. It will be tough (I can currently only jog 20 minutes without needing a break) but if I don't kill myself in the process I think I can do it. My plan of action includes building up mileage gradually week by week sticking to a 5.3mph training pace. I will run both indoors on the treadmill as well as outside. I will commit to running 3-4 times per week and will cross train and weight lift two days per week. My ass better look FANTASTIC when I'm done.

Good luck to everyone! I'm excited to see how we all progress week to week. :-)
