Bill's Up To Date

Here are my answers to the three questions put to us by our leader (but not in this race!) Jen.

My Orginal Goal: It was to be able to keep up with our pug, Reggie as we walked around Greenlake. If that was not attainable I was going to walk in a 10 K race at the end of March. Now I've learned that I must make a side trip with Lori, her dad and brother and his wife to Reno at the end of March. My new goal might be to stay up past 10:00 PM. or to walk to the various casinos on the main strip.

Really New Goal: Walk around Lake Union. I can do this on my own time and I might even buy myself a long-sleeved T-Shirt and put some cute quip on it. I can stop at the various bars, see the sights along the way, and try to locate our house from various vistas.

Training: I still do the elliptical daily for 50 minutes and spend 10 minutes in the steam room. I plan on walking Reggie along the lake. I will also visit various local bars ahead of time to ascertain whether they warrant my stopping during my walk. Maybe they will sponsor me!!! Lori would like to put a time limit on this walk, but really I just hope to finish!!

How is it going? As I stated I am exercising almost daily for 50 minutes. I have lost 14 pounds as of last week. Nobody at work has noticed except for a parent who left me a love note. I now weigh what I did when I needed to lose weight 6 years ago. I hope to lose another 30 pounds before this is over or soon thereafter. So have a great loss week. By the way being the oldest participant (by a week) and with plantar's fascitis I expect no extra compensation like 5 points!!!

When the heck can we bump Bill?

Sorry Fellow Losers, I must once again ask for your patience for bumping Bill from the lead. I am still not healthy enough to host such a rambunctious crew, so we'll give it another week. By then, if I'm not healthy enough, I will have checked myeslf into an insane asylum (or Bill will have done that for me), since I'm driving myself crazy not being able to exercise or much of anything else for the last several days now.

So, let's all coordinate our calendars for the following Saturday, February 10. If we don't want to bump Bill, we can find a way to sabotage Stephen, since his "aging" (please read his blog and if you're over 40, cry) muscles seem to be bothering him. Really, I now understand Jenny's not-so-subtle efforts......

In the meantime, while I'm not exercising, I am still managing to eat very healthy and good food. It is amazing how really great fruit and veggies taste when the flavors don't have to compete with a bunch of other sugars and fats in your system. I'm down several lbs and until a week ago felt better than I had in a few years. I am very optimistic that I will get back into the exercise regimen once I'm back on my feet.

Good luck to everyone else this week!

BLOGGER McDREAMY CHECKING IN

Hey Fellow Losers,

I must say that this whole program has been great for me. After a fairly strong start I have tapered off on the weight loss...however, the exercise and healthier eating has continued. Without the contest, I am not sure I would have taken the initiative to live better. In fact, I know I would not have taken the initiative. So thanks Jen, Colleen and everyone who let the outsiders in.

As for my 12-week goal....I feel good about it. Doing the Big Climb for Leukemia(69 flights of stairs in the Columbia Tower) is something I am sure I could complete today...but I would probably keel over in the process. I want to accomplish the task(with my beautiful wife Loree) and feel somewhat fit and athletic in the process.

To train for the goal, I have been doing stairs and treadmill at the gym and going on lots of brisk, “hilly” walks.

I never thought I would “look forward to” rice cakes, bananas, apples or green beans...but now I do...and that’s good, right?

Stephen's 1 Month Update

Your original 12-week fitness goal
Run 10k in under 50 minutes (8 minute miles)

Your new goal if you have changed it
Run 10k in under 47 minutes (about 7:30 minutes miles)

Your training plan for accomplishing your goal
Running program consisting of distance, speed, and strength workouts, 5 days per week.

How things are going/progressing. Do you feel like you will make it?
Things are going well. When I started this contest a month ago I just wanted to make it to this point and not be injured. So far I've had a few minor injuries off and on and there was even some controversy. This week, however, my entire left leg seems to want to secede from the rest of my body. I had to use Icey Hot yesterday to quell the uprising - a benchmark in aging that I had not looked forward to.

Despite various parts of my body that are clearly not happy with the changes I've made to my lifestyle, I am very happy with the way things are going and I'm excited to up my training level in the coming weeks.

Jen's goal!

Your original 12-week fitness goal

Run 5 miles in under 60 minutes

Your new goal if you have changed it

Kept goal the same—it’s challenging for me but, assuming I don’t injure myself, attainable through hard work and training.

Your training plan for accomplishing your goal

I started with running 3 times per week for 30 minutes each time. This week, I will start building one of those runs into a “long run.” So, this week I will do two 30-minute runs and one 33 minute run. Next week I will add a few minutes and so on. According to my plan (oh, yes! I am SUPER “type A”) I will be at the 5-mile mark by the middle of March, which should give me a little wiggle room if I need to slow down or repeat a week. As long as I don’t get slower (currently do an 11-12 minute mile if I’m running 3 miles or longer), I should be okay.

How things are going/progressing. Do you feel like you will make it?

Yesterday I ran outside for about 35 minutes and covered probably 3 miles. There were some hills which were a little rough, but it was a good challenge and my legs felt awesome. I was fitted for new running shoes last week and they’ve really made a difference. At this point, I feel like I am moving forward and am continuing to notice improvement in my endurance and cardio fitness. My weight training and cross training seems to be helping as well. Again, as long as I stay healthy I think I have a good shot at making my goal. Now, I just need to figure out if there a 5-mile race in the Seattle area or if Col and I (she has the same goal) will need to map out our own route.

Ideas?

How Much Is Enough

Not only am I exercising everyday but this week I have added a second workout. That's right "2 a day" and I still don't feel any thinner. I am hesitant to weigh myself midweek because if the scale doesn't read less it will put me in a tailspin that might send me into a feeding frenzy. At my physical this week my doctor told me there is no reason why I should not be loosing since all my tests came back normal. I'm beginning to think that my body is paying me back for all those missed meals/food fests.

Well at least I feel healthier if not thinner. I am not only on a diet for weight loss but I have also been on an elimination diet for migraine food triggers. I have decreased my caffeine consumption to 1 cup of green tea daily and plan to go totally off caffeine in the next few weeks. I sure do miss my Starbucks.

I think you are right Jen about how we measure our success. I didn't take my measurements but I can tell my jeans are less tight.

Still happy for small successes......

Pinching an inch (less)

So...the saga of my scale woes continues. I appear to have gained back the 1.8lbs I lost last week despite continued efforts on the eating and at the gym (my official weigh-in day is tomorrow, but I'm not holding out much hope).

SO--I decided to take a new set of measurements. I am so glad I measured myself when I started this program and was delighted this morning to find out that although I've only lost three pounds, I have taken over 1.5 inches off of my waist! I now fall solidly into Dr. Oz's guidelines for women (women should have waist measurements of less than 32 inches, men less than 35), when before I was teetering on the edge of too much tummy chunk.

It's a good reminder to look for other ways of gauging success--the scale can only tell us so much!

Sore Everything

It's been a while since I posted, and this is what has happened since I last updated:

1. I've been running at least 5 days per week, which is more running than I've done since cross country in high school.

2. Everything from my knees down hurts. Name a muscle, ligament, tendon, joint, whatever. It hurts. They all hurt. Here's an example of what I'm talking about: There's a tendon that runs along the outer side of the knee called the LCL (opposite side of the ACL). One day during an average run my LCL stiffens up and feels like it just got three inches shorter. So I stop running, because, you know, it hurts, and go home to hit the internets to see what I might have done to it. I'm looking up "knee problems" on various medical websites and I'm reading about ACL and MCL injuries and all of the nasty things that can happen to your knee. When I finally find something about the LCL, all the entry says is, "LCL: Rarely Injured." That's it. So now I'm hurting somewhere so uncommon that the great and powerful internets can't even tell me what's wrong.

3. As for the allegations of sabotage, my key witness (the dog), seems to have come down with what can only be described as "Scooter Libby Syndrome", and has forgotten what happened. So I'm dropping the case.

Finally, here's a website that one of my soccer buddies referred me to. It's got great nutrition advice for all manner of exercise and sports activities and I've already learned that carbohydrates after running = happy muscles.

Holding on the party until next week

Sorry about this fellow losers, since I know we were ALL looking forward to bumping that over-confident husband of mine from the lead. I have found myself with a very odd set of headaches this week, and may be out of commission for a few more days. Based on that, we'd like to hold the party NEXT FRIDAY instead. I know, I know, that means that Bill may move further beyond all of us mere mortals. But take heart, what could be undone one week, can be undone the next instead. FYI, he's so committed that he has exercised at 4:30 A.M. three mornings this week. Is there no stopping this man???????????????

Hope everyone else is doing as well - L

10 Things I Forgot That Come With Weight Loss

Being the nice person I am and also always above the fray, I regretfully refuse to slander or retaliate against my adversaries. Instead to keep thing lite, I came up with 10 things that I've been experiencing since the inception of this contest.

10 - No longer is vaseline needed to take off one's wedding ring (for cleaning only!)
9 - Showering at the club reduces water costs at home
8 - I start to look at designer workout clothes
7 - Consuming wine only on week-ends makes one crave more expensive bottles
6 - I never knew brussels sprouts could be prepared in so many different ways
5 - Waking up at 4:10 AM to Poker After Dark can give me pointers when in Las Vegas/Reno
4 - I can find a parking spot at 4:45 AM at the WAC (and it's cheaper)
3 - Using AquaVelva and Clubman colognes make women turn around and wink
2- I don't have to unbuckle my pants to take them off
1- Chicks dig older men in running shorts

A few other items of note: I never authorized my picture to be used on an Internet Blog site, but so be it. Being one of several from the Dairy State, this week's challenge will be easy (does sour cream count!!!). Alas I must forewarn you I have had my 320 oz. dog, Reggie, memorize all of your pictures in her very advanced brain. She is prepared to forego her defensive posture for a more preemptive strike against anyone who thinks they can derail me at the so named Bump Bill Party at our house this week. Have a great weight loss week.

Bill

Okay, people...this is what we want to see this weekend:

For those of you who don't know him, the enemy is pictured here with wine glass in hand. This is the desired goal this weekend. Give him a glass of white wine and tell him it's sugarfree grape juice. Or a glass of sparkling wine and tell him it's Perrier. Whatever. Just give him some booze and make sure to strategically place the most caloric appetizers. Our collective success depends on it.

Week 3 highlights and standings

Weekly Challenge Winner: Michelle, who stretched all seven days! Can you do the splits now, Michelle?

This week's big losers: Bill, Lori & John T all dropped three or more pounds this week! Yowza!

Most Days Exercised: Bill, Michelle & John T are in the "7 day" club. Bill & Michelle have both worked out 14 days in a row!

Total number of pounds our group lost in three weeks: 66!! That's the weight of a medium-sized dog! Or Colleen's cat Nugget!

Reminders: Please vote on the bonus points (either 15 or 5) to be given to ladies 50+ before Wednesday evening.

Week 4 challenge: Dairy!! Three a day! Or more--just make sure to eat your fiber, too.

10 Things I Remember About Weight Loss

Sometimes I forget the little things that come with weight loss and working out at the club/gym. So here are my top 10:

10 - Your watch doesn't become unhasped as often
9 - Showering at the Club decreases your home water bill
8 - You no longer have to unbuckle your pants to take them off
7 - You save on toiletries
6 - You don't need to use vaseline to take off your wedding ring
5- One can find a parking spot at 5:00 AM at the WAC
4- You start looking at designer workout clothing
3- Since wine consumption is limited to week-ends, you're buying more expensive wine
2 - I never knew all the ways brussels sprouts could be prepared
1- Chicks dig older men in running shorts

P.S. When you arrive at our townhome this week for the Bump Bill party, my 320 oz. dog Reggie will check for weapons and be alerted to a strike first mentality rather than a defensive posture. Bring it on!! Have a good week and see you on either Friday or Sunday. Also some of us are from the Dairy State so tough luck you Evergreeners!!!

In Need of Witness

Only week three, and the aches and pains are gaining ground. Feelin' like a fat squirrel tonight, 'cause I indulged in too much pizza and too many snacks this weekend! Work has been all-consuming; but I'm at least still getting in 3-4 good workouts per week; and other than this weekend, am keeping the food intake under reasonable control. Just GOT to get my cardio activity up a substantial notch though or those pounds just aren't going to come off. Sure would come in handy to have a resident witness...

Sounds like everyone is still hanging in there - congrats, and keep the faith!!

Diet fatigue?

Karen--I too have been struggling a little bit more in the past couple of days. I think after 3 weeks on the program it gets hard to keep the same enthusiasm. I actually gave myself a "free day" yesterday where I ate whatever I wanted (including pizza & junior mints!) I think it's important to plan treats in every once in a while so we don't start feeling deprived and burnt out.

I'm going to spend some time this weekend planning meals for next week. I could use some exciting new food choices, so if anyone has any ideas let's hear 'em!

Exercising has been going well, but for some reason I'm finding it hard to get in more than 5 days per week. I work out at a pretty high intensity and just feel too tired to do 6 or 7 days per week. Next week I'm going to try and bump it up to 6, even if I just do an easy workout one day. Colleen is picking me up here in a couple of minutes and we're running Greenlake. Wish me luck--it's my first outdoor run in a while!

Would love to hear how everyone else is doing!

Friday night

Okay Losers....today was a hard day for eating, don't know why, snow was gone, rain was here, Seahawks won't be playing this week-end, can't tell you why....I did power through the day and did okay. At my desk at work I have almonds and melba toast.....At home I have veggies and fruits, so not too much that could do me in. I did come home and exercise for 30 minutes......I must admit I feel good after I have done my treadmill. I have to remember that. How is eveyone else been doing?????? Karen

Warmer Weather Brings A Better Attitude

The snow is finally beginning to melt in my neighborhood. Can you believe this winter we are having, I was starting to think that Issaquah was the new Denver. I hope some warmer weather will help change my eating habits as its hard not to eat when your stuck inside all day.

Who ever suggested sparkpeople.com - THANKS! I never really ever tracked my calorie intake and wow what an eye opener. That site has saved me from making some really big slip-ups. According to them I need to eat to loose - who knew? I have always been a meal skipper thinking I was doing myself a big favor well it turns out that only makes me more hungry and more inclined to over eat. Those of you who haven't checked it out should do so. It's kind of a pain to set up your daily nutrition but its well worth it.

I have finally, after 10 days, been able to run one mile. I also figured out my shin splints (too much weight yet to run long distance) problem and have been running only short distances. As long as I don't injure myself, I should be able to achieve my fitness goal by March. The only bummer with having running as my fitness goal is that I don't burn as many calories on the treadmill as I do on the elliptical.

Still having fun
Michelle

Stepping it up: Jen hires personal trainer

Not to be outdone by his uncle Gus, Hugo joins the fun and takes on a challenging role as Jen's personal trainer. Here, he is shown instructing her in the proper way to complete a hip stretch. He's a demanding coach, but assures Jen that through his guidance and her hard work prize money is in their future (he will receive a new Kong as a bonus).

*******

Week 2 is starting well. Yesterday and today I did 30 minutes of weight training followed by 20 minutes of high intensity interval training. If you're shopping for a workout program, I highly recommend the Body for Life cardio and weight training methods (www.bodyforlife.com). I do both the cardio & weights on the same day and then supplement with my running. I am SORE, I tell ya! (though the stretching seems to help)

I have also been hungry, but am taking that as a sign that my plan is working. Last week I felt suspiciously satisfied...

Working out, eating well and still feel crappy about how you look? I found this video to be an eye opener about "beauty": http://www.campaignforrealbeauty.com/flat4.asp?id=6909

Hope you are all enjoying your week!

Jen

Stretching Made Easy

I had a pedicure today for my aching feet. My feet and legs also received a massage. I think that counts for today's stretching!!! I stated I wanted the entire pedicure package without the nail polish. John, they just didn't have the color you use!!! My treat this week is Blue Bunny Health Smart Creme Bars. They were recommended by Weight Watchers the last time I lost the flab. They are fat free, no sugar added, 70 calories per serving, only 2 grams of sugar and 4 grams of dietary fiber - I guess that comes if you eat the stick! They can be purchased at Albertson's and Metropolitan Market. Having an unplanned vacation this past week did wonders for going to the gym to work out. Oh when I have to exercise again with all the common folk! Have a great week.

Bill

Gus heeds Lori's advice: His Problem Compounds!

The carrots were good, but holy cow!
What do I do now Doc? I am thinner, but man how do I get out of this one?

A diet tip for Gus

Gus,

Try eating carrot sticks instead of cookies. If you close your eyes and think fattening thoughts, they almost taste as good!

- Reggie, the pug

Day 16.......

Day 16 and still hanging in there. I broke down and had a few potato wedges from KFC yesterday, they were good going down, but I wished later and I had not eaten them. I still haven't had any sugar, so I feel upbeat about that. Exercise is going good, I'm starting to push myself on the tredmill and that feels like I'm accomplishing in that area. I'm getting a bit bored with my meals, which have been a lot of salads, roasted chicken, fish and veggies. I need to try some new recipes, since today is another "snow day" I think I will check out some recipes, head to the grocery store and make some new dishes. I am 4.5 pounds lighter!!

Gus to the Group: I am dead serious about this!

Now who really believes I won't be motivated!

Gus Officially Enters Contest!

Weighing in at a record 105lbs., Gus comes clear with what has been really happening. He has been caught one too many times with his hand Bailey's food and the cookie jar while simultaneously laying down on the job and ignoring a healthy life style.

Gus committed today to exercise 7 times a week, eat fewer cookies and not delve into his brother's food! About time boy! Time to get to work!

He has also volunteered to help resolve the case regarding Stephen's mysterious injury. He will travel to Seattle this weekend, on an all expenses paid trip, to investigate the case with his pal private investigator Hugo. I truly hope they can to the bottom of this and resolve the mystery!

BTW, Gus has agreed to contribute 1000 Korean Won for the contest! Yeah a whole buck!

Week 2 highlights and current standings

Weekly Challenge Winner: Stephen, who ate 49 servings of fruits & veggies!
Most Pounds lost this week: John S with SIX lbs dropped!
Most Days Exercised: Bill & Michelle both worked out ALL SEVEN DAYS!
Total number of pounds our group lost in two weeks: 46!!

Current Standings

1. (tie) Karen-34
1. (tie) Bill-34
3. John T-32
4. Kathy Tullis-29
5. John S-24
6. Stephen-23
7. Jen-21
8. Colleen-19

Incremental Change Leads to Breakthrough

Hello All,

As you know from my last week's blog, I was struggling a bit on my trip. I continued to exercise - and that's great, but I wasn't as careful with food choices as I should have been, and came back weighing 1 lb heavier than last week's weigh in. BUMMMER.

Other than the weight gain, I'm doing great, and that's what I'm concentrating on. I'm up to 45 or more minutes of exercising (from 30) and I did it 5 times last week (up from 4). I'm up to 36 crunches, and I can now get through the first 20 without feeling like I was going to die. A boss years ago told me, "incremental change leads to breakthrough", and that is now my mantra.

So for those who had just an 'ok' week of fitness focus, look for the things that did go great, and move on from those that didn't. Have a great seven days!

Lawyer Up.

Does Jen have a motive? You bet. She admits to being at the scene. I even have a suprise witness. And by suprise I mean our dog saw her do it. I think that's all I need. I could even get a doctor to testify that there is no way my wounds could be self inflicted. So to Jen I say, settle up - or I will take you for everything you, um... we have.

Oh, and happy six month anniversary! Love you!

Nancy and Stephen...same person?

The similarities are striking. Both blame a competitor for their downfall. Apparently both suffered "leg problems." I have no doubt Nancy is as fond of beer as Stephen. And both screeched "Why me?!!!!" in that very same pitch. What do I say? The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

And there's more: Neither can conclusively prove that their injuries were connected in any way to their competition. While I hesitate to link myself to the likes of Tonya Harding, I can't help but feel a twinge of sisterhood. Sure...Nancy's knee was crushed. Sure...Stephen's leg was kicked. But was it TONYA'S doing? Was it mine? I should think not. All we really know is that at some point on Thursday evening someone kicked Stephen in the kitchen.

Have we considered the obvious? That Stephen's injury was perhaps self-inflicted in some perverse and desperate effort to garner sympathy and perhaps disqualify his wife from the competition? The situation was grim. With arguably the fewest pounds to lose of anyone in the competition, Stephen stepped on the scale and was gripped with fear as he saw the numbers rise. He went to the kitchen and while reaching for yet another beer the "attack" happened. A coincidence that I was in the bedroom at the time? I think not. Friends, He DID THIS TO HIMSELF. Anyone who has seen the Tonya Harding E-True Hollywood Story knows that this is a distinct possibility.

Now, I'm not saying that Stephen should be fined or eliminated from the contest after this one (egregious) offense. BUT-let's keep an eye on him, shall we? Any additional "injuries" should be regarded with suspicion.

I look forward to a public apology

Friday, January 12, 2007

You see, it could be worse...

This loser is having a trying week and coming down with a serious case of cabin fever. Let's see...it took me no fewer than 5 hours to make my way home from work on Wednesday night. (I agree with John - shouldn't that be worth something in stress-burnoff points??) Since Wednesday, my laundry room flooded (leak source untraceable) and soaked a brand new box of kitty litter, spreading a repulsively slimy sludge across my new ceramic tile and hallway carpet; a roof leak has developed over my bedroom above the bed; my garage door won't open (car inside); and I wrenched my L5 while shoveling the driveway. I left the house once to visit my chiropractor and walk the dog, but have otherwise have been ridiculously immobile, popping Advil and rehabbing with the ice-heat-stretching routine. I've got the fruit and veggies dept. well covered, but don't think the cardio cops or skinny police will be singing my praises this week.

And Jen, it might be more readily disabling if you go ahead and kick Stephen in the other shin. I don't blame you for being frustrated, but remember we're only 2 weeks in. Besides - the temperature really dropped this week; ee're battling our body's instinct to stock extra pounds for insulation and warmth...right?

Taking out the competition

Seriously. It's on. Yesterday things went to a whole new level of competition in the Russell Household. After a good workout and signs of progress in the weight department, at around 6 o'clock my lovely wife encouraged me to have a beer. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? When I was done with that one she went right to the fridge a pored me another. By itself this is nothing to complain about, in fact having a wife do this for her husband is a joy that all men hope for (it's one of the top 10 reasons I married her). However, in the context of this competition, I had my suspicions that she may have had ulterior motives in getting me to drink up. It's called Fat Tire, after all. Well, later last night my suspicions were confirmed when, in an act of "goofing around" my dear wife kicked me in the left shin. Hard. Drawing blood. And today there's a welt the diameter of a golf ball that hurts when I walk.

So this morning, bloated and hobbled, I stood on the scale and saw the weight that I had lost over the last week right back where it started. And as she kissed me goodbye this morning on her way to work, I thought I saw the glimmer of victory in her eye.

I have presented the evidence as it happened. So while she might speak encouraging words and offer a warm hand of friendly competition, watch your back. And you legs. Personally, I will take to wearing my shin guards around the house.

Not a Bad Week So Far!

It’s been a pretty good week for me so far. To this point, I’ve met my weekly goal of eating at least one piece of fresh fruit a day, a big deal for me.
Loree and I have exercised every day. Plus no dietary transgressions...but the Seahawks game Sunday may provide a challenge. I won’t check the scale until Monday, so I don’t know if I lost any pounds...but I FEEL much better.

Also, Let me clear something up. I stated earlier that I planned to kick my wife’s ass in our challenge of taking on the Big Climb for Leukemia.
What I meant to say, is that I plan to lovingly hold hands with Loree and encourage her for every step of the 69 flights of stairs.

Carry on Losers!

I'm Still Here!!!

Even though there was ice on the roads and I could lay in bed all day, I still made it to the WAC to exercise. I haven't weighed myself since last Sunday, but I know I've lost more weight because the towel I use after showering stays on without me holding it. That's a big deal in a men's locker room!!! I also have been in two bars this week and had sparking water in both. It was tempting to see others having a cold Guinness. I thought maybe I would ask to smell their glasses, but decided otherwise. I'm picking my spouse up at the airport on Friday and heading to Portland to see friends. They are wine lovers - I'll be put to the test again. Welcome to all newcomers - there will be a test to see if you can match relatives and spouses.

Bill

Hang in there Jen!!

Jen: Don't get discouraged! Keep up the hard work. The lbs will eventually come off!

I haven't been able to get the exercise the last 2 nites. Last nite was pretty tiring. I did not get home until 8:15pm despite being as close as Costco at 5:30pm. The snow was amazing and I was damn lucky not to end up in a deep ditch coming up one of the hills to the Sammamish Plateau. Thank heavens for some nice people. 3 Guys I did not know from a hole in the wall helped me get unstuck and once I was unstuck I floored the gas pedal and weaved my way thru several cars up a steep hill and back home!

Kath did not get home until 9pm or so despite leaving Seattle at 4:15. Some of the worst snow and ice we have experienced in quite awhile. We ended up with a bit over 6" of snow.

I think Kath and I should get credit for the exercise due to the millions of calories we burned up driving thru all that crap! How about it jury? Just kidding!

I was really tempted to break out a bottle of wine when I finally did reach home, but Karen convinced me to hang in there! I only need to suffer thru 2 more days before I can break out a glass on Saturday! Yeah!

$%&!*$#!!!!

That's me when I step on the scale these days.

As Stephen can attest, I've had several weight-related bad moods (is that an understatement, honey?) in the last week. Why? Well, despite busting my hump (HELLO! No sugar! No bad carbs! Counting calories! Running! Weight training!) the scale continues to move in the wrong direction. While I'd love to blame it on the manufacturer, it seems to be working okay for Stephen so I'm guessing the problem lies elsewhere.

Which brings me to my options. I can either continue to spin into a swearing rage every few days when I check my progress or I can develop other means of defining success. For Stephen's sake, I've decided on the latter. So, instead of getting hung up on what the scale says (the bastard!), I am going to do the following:

1. Take my measurements every few weeks and use that as a way to gauge my fat loss
2. Focus on increases in strength while weight training and speed and endurance while running
3. Keep off the scale except for my official weigh-in day. This will be hard--perhaps I will make it my behavioral goal for next week.

This stall in weight loss may not bode well for my place in the standings, but I am trying REALLY hard to take a more long-term view of things. It's been brutal on my competitive nature, but probably part of a maturation process. Or something.

Just know that when you report your losses each week, I silently hate you more and more.

Kidding. Of course. ;)

Hope everyone else is having a good week. The cold weather should make my outside runs interesting!

Jen

Finally.......

Hi Everyone,

Sorry it has taken me so long to finally figure out how to work this blog log-in. I am not normally technically challenged so I’m thinking it's probably the reduced caloric intake? Anyway thanks for letting me "crash" the competition however it sucked to read the results from last week and not be a little discouraged because I am in last place.

My fitness goal is to be able to jog 5 miles without stopping. I got so excited about getting started yesterday I tried to see how far I could jog. Not only was I distraught by the fact that I could not even run one mile, I woke up this morning with the beginnings of "shin splints". So now I will have to take it a bit slower and not let my enthusiasm spin out of control.

This blog couldn't have come at a better time for me as I try to loose some extra pounds; eat healthier, quit caffeine and look for a job. It will be therapeutic having a place to vent frustration when the scale doesn't move in the right direction or guilt after consuming a hot fudge sundae. Speaking of frustration, Jen don't be let the scale get you down I know cause I am like you. We can take some small comfort in the fact that we are building muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. Thanks for the tip though about taking measurements and staying off the scale, that will help boost my morale.

later on............Michelle

Today from NY

Hello fellow Losers:

Ok, as if Jen doesn't feel good enough about herself after all of that praise she's received, here's more. Thank you Jen for making this FUN.

I'm signing on for the first time since I started my trip. John-boy (as in Tullis) -way to go on the 5+lbs! Karen - seven days is amazing. And, if I recall, one of those days you exercised twice. Your treadmill is getting a workout, too!

My goal this week, as Jen knows, is to avoid the rolls/breads, etc. that are my downfall when I travel. Not easy, as those who travel know - and unfortunately, yesterday I blew it. We had food brought in to our eight hour meeting. And I had a salad - that was good, but looking at a pack of chips when confined with four men for eight hours is just really too much for my discipline level. I caved around 3:00 yesterday. Yes, they were good, but happily, not great. And, here's the good news in my sad, little confession. There were cookies and other chips, etc. around, and I did not indulge.

Last night, I had a very large fruit salad, and this morning a banana and small orange to get my fruit/veggie intake started. Here's another confession: there ain't no way I am measuring my food on a trip. I am eyeballing amounts: two clementine oranges= 1 serving, 1 banana = 1 serving, my salad yesterday was probably 3 cups, etc. I draw the line at carrying a set of measuring cups with me. Hopefully, you will all take me at my word.

I worked out Monday after I arrived. Felt great. I have never done that after a long flight, and I am now a convert. I take the train to Philly tonight, and will work out again once I get there. Somehow, this morning, 5:00 (2:00 your time) was just too early for me, and getting back to the hotel at 9:00 last night was too late. So, today is the day.

Everyone keep up the great work. Welcome, Loree and John - you're among friends.

One more thing...

Did Brad Pitt really join our group....would he like to meet for a diet coke anytime soon? I'll treat.......

Ditto with Kathy G

I agree with Kathy G....because of Jen's great idea of the Biggest Loser...I've lost three pounds and have exercised every day for 9 days!! I feel pretty damn good and I know I would not be in this state if Jen and not started this!! Thank you!! Thank you!! I may have eaten a bit more today than I should have, but at least it was not junk food, it was health food, like rice crackers, whole grain bread, rice, etc. /What can I say, I've been hungry, probably from my time I've been on the "belt". I saw a box of Sees Candy on a co-workers desk and REALLY wanted a "few" pieces of the candy, but I said "NO" to myself. I just walked alway and ate some pretzels, wasn't the same as candy, but I got over it. Now 6 hours later, I'm glad I did not eat it. It is getting easier, but this is going to take a while........Karen

Thanks to Jen

A big shout out to Jen because she not only conceived of this brainchild but she acted on it and we are all healthier already!!! Thank you. On top of that we now know more about the Danes and Naked parties than we thought possible thanks to Stephen. Honestly, Stephen I love your posts!!

Now on to the veggies and fruits...........I consumed a whopping 8 servings on Monday and 7 servings today I say bring it on. Although as I sit here writing this blog I realize that I ate more fruit and veggies the last two days than I did the entire month of December. No wonder I am experiencing a low rumble south of my waist line.

Welcome to the newbees John and Loree. Loree while I don't know you yet you may be far too sweet for this group. You are so supportive of your husband while it is apparent he wants to bury you on some stair well in the Columbia tower before he allows you to beat him. Get tough Loree or was that just a disguise???

Hey gang........weight loss is like the weather in Seattle you never know what you'll end up with or without. Here's to snow tomorrow.

The Secret of Happiness

In an effort to extend my pattern of posting about things that are not directly related to this blog's topic (the "blopic"? anybody?), I will point you all to another NYT article. It's about how people in Denmark are happier than people in any other country in the Western World. The results of the research in question suggest that this is because the Danes possess a lower set of expectations about their lives than other groups of people so when they exceed these expectations they are happier.

And now, to make what I find to be an independently interesting article germane to this blog (to get back on blopic as it were), I will attempt to tie the idea of lowered expectations to my own standards of health and fitness. I wanted to be a part of this contest because I found that my happiness level with my physical appearance/health was lower than I wanted it to be. I could then do one of two things: I could have done what the Danes are doing and simply lowered my expectations of myself (which I did for a while); or I could raise the amount of success I have with maintaining my physical fitness and nutrition. I found that lowered expectations only got me so far - really it was only a moment to moment happiness that ended up not amounting to any sort of sustainable feelings of satisfaction. I think that this falls into the "defense mechanism" category of self-justifying thought processes. I've come up with the following equation to more clearly illustrate this principle:

H = Happiness Level
S = Amount of Success
E = Level of Expectations

As this equation illustrates, as your level of expectation decreases, happiness increases. Also, as your level of success increases, the level of happiness increases.

I'm all about health, baby!

So, as a corollary to my lose-weight-to-look-good-in-jeans plan, I've also been working on a lose-weight-to-live-longer plan. As part of that plan (and at the suggestion of my dear mother), I made an appointment to see a cardiologist to get a few things checked out.

He confirmed a couple of facts for me: 1. I am out of shape 2. I could stand to lose a few pounds.

He actually used the phrase, "Well, it's not like your markedly overweight and you're not a slug"...an effort to make boost my self esteem? He emphasized for me the importance of continuing my running program for cardio (to be honest I'm a little pissed I'm not in better than "pretty bad" cardio shape after six weeks of running) and watching my blood pressure. I go for an echocardiogram on Friday to see how the ticker is functioning overall, so good times all around.

It was nice, though, to have a reminder that losing weight and getting in shape is about more than reducing the sense of shame in a bathing suit (or at one of those new naked parties Stephen mentioned). I am going to follow up this appointment with a general physical so I can get my cholesterol and all the other ugly numbers. Reality may not be pretty, but what we don't know CAN hurt us. Isn't that how the old saying goes?

So get thee to a doctor for a check-up if you haven't done so recently. The added shame from a weight lecture will surely boost your weekly results.

:-)

Three pounds lighter!!!

It it feels great to shed 3 pounds off this body!! I know exercising had a HUGE part in this, I must keep it up.......I'm grilling tiger prawns and using Kathy's cocktail sauce of ketchup (it won't be 200 calories of ketchup) and horseradish sauce for dinner Horseradish sauce seems to be my newest friend!! I forgot so slam my H2O today, so I'm currently chugging water as I type, this is my dietary goal for the week. Hi to our newest "losers", the more the merrier!! Karen

HAPPY TO JOIN "LOSERVILLE"!

This is perfect for me, I’ve always been one hell of a loser.

I am happy to be in the group and excited about getting rid of some extra pounds. A couple years ago I was very successful with Atkins...but have gained quite a bit of that weight back. Plus I know there are healthier ways to lose weight than steaks, butter, sour cream, etc.

I am hoping this program will make me a little more comfortable in my clothes, help me eat healthier food, generally feel better and maybe even sleep better.

My 11 week goal is to complete The Big Climb for Leukemia, 69 flights of stairs up the Columbia Center Tower. I’ll be joining Loree, my wife in this goal. And no doubt I will kick her butt. This is not something I can even image completing at this moment, so I think it is a stretch for me.

Thanks again for letting us tag along.

Week 2 challenge: Fruits and veggies. The loser who eats the greatest number of fruits and veggies servings Mon-Sunday will win the week 2 challenge. Make sure to jot down the number as you go--no "estimating" at the end of the week allowed. How do you count a serving, you ask?

-One medium-sized fruit
-1/2 cup raw, cooked, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables
-3/4 cup 100% fruit or vegetable juice
-1/2 cup cooked, canned or frozen legumes (beans or peas)
-1 cup raw, leafy vegetables
-1/4 cup dried fruit

Good luck team--let's see if we can't beat 30 total pounds next week. We have three new losers to help us out!

Naked Parties - and not the sexy kind

I know that this is extremely tangential to the mission of this blog, however since I've been standing naked on the scale more often recently, and I'm assuming others have been doing the same, this NYT article (free registration req'd) stood out this morning. Some students at the better class of East Coast institutions of higher learning thought it would be interesting to the cast off the social signaling that goes along with being clothed, and have taken to throwing parties where you only get to wear shoes. Evidently there's more sophisticated conversation and a lot less drinking - a far cry from most of the college parties you hear about, where the very ideas of "sophisticated" and "less drinking" aren't really in line with the spirit of the evening. And while I am certainly NOT advocating any of us throwing one of these parties, it is an intriguing idea.

And with those images in your head I will note that my first week of the contest has to be considered successful: I made it to the gym six times, kept the diet healthy, dropped 3 lbs., and stayed off the sauce. Hurrah.

Go Loserville -

Lovin' reading all the blogs! What great efforts by everyone. Stephen - have to admit you've got my curiosity up...what does 200 hundred calories of catsup look like??

Am all puffed up with fiber pride and vitamin A&C potency 'cause I stopped off at the new Avondale PCC tonight and stocked up on loads of organic fruits & veggies. My fridge overfloweth with so much roughage and pommes, I had to get out the pruning sheers just to close the door.

I'm thrilled with my first week; plenty of exercise and good progress toward healthier eating. Still had a couple fast-food runs, but am doing way better in that dept. I'm also finding my stamina to be way up and the aches and pains way down. Go figure?? Must be those vitamins and glucosamine supps I finally started taking religiously. Gotta work on that sleep thing too though, or it ain't gonna last...

The first real week back at work after the holidays was a killer; we launch (to manufacturers) the next version of Windows Mobile this coming week; then a key supplemental release right on its heals, so I'm really going to need extra self-discipline this coming month.

Ciao for now,

Allie

Thanks for letting me in!

I am Loree S, friend of Colleen. She mentioned this group to me and I begged her to let me in. I am a week late but i will try to make up for it.

This comes just when I need it...I have been slowly gaining weight the past few months and have not been motivated to work out. I love the way this is set up and I think accountability and the chance for cash prizes will inspire me.

My husband John S will be competing too and we will be encouraging each other. Our goal is to complete the Big Climb in the Columbia Tower on March 18th. I did it once before 12 years ago but can hardly haul myself up the three flights of stairs at my office right now!

Good luck to everyone!

Neil Diamond?!

Really Ben? You're cranking Neil when you run? Wow. I feel like I have some new piece of trivia about you! We'll have to send him a fruit basket if you win. ; )

All in all the week went well. I'm tired, but I survived it! I exercised 6 days - 4 days of running, 1 personal training session and a 6 mile walk today. My trainer is wa-ay excited about our little program. She's approaching our training sessions like its her personal mission to ensure I win. I think she might very well kill me.

Sis, I'm sorry the exercise is messing with your back. Take it easy!

Thanks for the scallop and chili recipes. Keep the ideas coming!

Two of my friends are joining the team. They know they're starting a week behind but they've got a fire in their belly! Loree & Michelle will be logging on tonight or tomorrow. I might have to get pictures of everyone so people know who they're talking to. In the meantime, please welcome them when they log on.

I made it through the week with no booze! Stunning, huh? Next week I'm taking it in another direction: I have to drink at least 64 ounces of water a day.

I'll blog again soon. Nice job this week everyone!
Hey Folks,

Sorry I didn't blog last week just back at school after being gone for 5 weeks kept me busy. The food thing went well as I went into the week having made Turkey Chili and a Lentil Soup. Having an apple and peanut butter on my desk saved my butt (literally).

I currently have more veggies in my frig than Whole Foods has on their shelves. Yesterday Jen, Stephen, Karen and her husband Herb, joined us for the Seahawks game and it is possible to watch a game without a beer or glass of wine in your hand. I marinated and grilled extra large prawns with traditionally coctail sauce, lots of veggies with a 3 layer hummus(cilantro, jalepeno, and spicy) that I got at Trader Joe's. I sliced some crusty whole grain bread and served it with herb and garlic cream cheese and chunks of smoked salmon. Karen brought some great strawberries and vodka and cranberry juice, Thanks! We all had an exciting time listening to John express himself. The food was enjoyed and I don't think anyone felt deprived, at least I didn't.

I learned last week that walking is very hard on the back (damn)and I was doing way too much. The suggestion for me is to get on a stationary bike for short periods of time as often as possible. So now I am in the market for a good bike any suggestions????

Good luck to everyone this week, John and I will be enjoying Taco Salads tomo9rrow that will qualify for 5 servings of veggies! Bring on the fruit and veggies. Drinking 8 glass of H2O will be my goal this week and this is always a struggle when I begin...hello bathroom.

Take Care

Day of Reckoning--week 1

First-great job Bill & Lori on the exercise! I'm impressed you banged out those work outs despite the lack of sleep (always tough for me).

So...today was my first weigh-in day and (drum roll please!) I am down exactly 1 pound. Although I won't earn weight loss points this week, it's moving in the right direction. I'll take it! Next week's weigh in may be rough since I've added weight training this week, which usually means a tough time at the scale for me.

My work outs have been going well and tomorrow will be my fifth day this week. I credit Neil Diamond, who I have been playing obsessively on my Ipod, for getting me through my runs. Thanks Neil!

Stephen and I have eaten EVERY MEAL AT HOME (or brought to work from home) this week, which is huge for us. It's been fun for me to do more cooking and experiment with different recipes. Looking for an unbelievable chili? I highly recommend this recipe from Cooking Light: http://food.cookinglight.com/cooking/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=438689

I need to do our meal planning for next week and plan to try Bill & Lori's scallop recipes--any other ideas would be awesome!

Seahawks sans beer and chips

Good luck to all of us watching the game today without our regular snacks. Bill and I will be eating 200 calories worth of carrots (thank you Stephen for that illuminating website...) and washing it down with yet more water.

We both exercised today. I worked really late last night, so didn't take the opportunity to exercise. Today, with little sleep and no real motivation, I pushed myself through 35 minutes on the treadmill. Bill kept up his standard 45 on the elliptical. I DID NOT WANT to exercise this morning, and I'm really proud of myself for making it through. I'm walking just under a 15 minute mile...I have a long way to go to cut 3 minutes off my time and keep it up for 4 miles.

Kathy T, thanks for the info on the St Patty's day run/walk. Bill and I signed up for the "yellow wave" (aka the Walk/Crawl). Any other joiners? When you read the website for the run, there is a link to Brooks Sports and their Thursday night run/walk around Greenlake. It starts in February, and I think we'll do that too.

I'm Back

I'm writing this as I'm drinking my 12th glass of water and eating my snack of unsalted pretzel sticks. I forgot how much better tasting they are compared to salty potato chips dipped in fattening clam dip!!! I have just completed my 4th out of 5 days at the gym. I spend 45 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minutes in the steam. I also am tanning so I'll look even better when this flab falls off. I need every means to lose this weight. I even decided to walk around and talk more in the classroom. The kids asked what they could do to help my weight loss and I asked them to misbehave so I could yell because the strain on the throat expends more calories. Also for Drew's last night here before heading back to school Lori and I shared a 3 ounce steak, small potato and a small greek sald. Oh for small portions go thee!!! This is all for now as I stuff another unsalted pretzel into my mouth

Bill

End of Day 5

Exercising is going good, I'm slammin' down the water, eating has been somewhat of a challenge because I'm craving the bad carbs. I'm sure I'm going through withdrawals. The bad thing is that it is all over the office, so I'm constantly being challenged. I will say it is getting easier. I'm glad I really made my first dietary goal of no sugar, because that has helped me just to say NO to all the sweets. Made a good dipping sauce with spicy mustard and horse radish sauce. I bought some QFC deli lunchmeat and dip it in the sauce. Very good!! Lori, the scallops sound good, I will give it a try. Let me hear from you losers!! Karen

Good run

I went for a 30 minute run at lunch and feel GREAT. It was so, so much better than my run on Wednesday. I think being outside really helped. I even ran up some hills! I went sloooooooowly but I did it!

Hope everyone else is doing great.

Hungry For a Month

So this guy in Lansing, MI decided to only spend $30 on food for a month to see what it would be like to be poor. He did it and lost 18 pounds. Here's a link to the blog he wrote while he was doing it. I haven't read the whole thing, but from what I saw it was quite an undertaking. Anyone looking for creative weight-loss strategies? Hungry For a Month

Thursday, January 4, 2007

Hello all. I'm up to 22 crunches, and it's more painful each time. I'm probably doing something wrong, but really, how tough can crunches be? I walked/ran for 30 minutes last night, and truly thought I was going to faint, too (Jen and I need to stay away from subway stations, I guess).
Made a truly outstanding meal last night, and so I'm sharing it with all of you:
-sear scallops for about 4 minutes, turning once, in 2 T olive oil as well as a good coating of cooking spray. Remove from pan and keep warm -add sliced garlic to the pan (with a bit more spray and/or oil) and brown
-Add to the same pan, two or three large diced tomatoes (or a whole bunch of grape tomatoes) and saute for several minutes, until you have a nice sauce.
-Stir in any other veggie you want (we added blanched green beans and mushrooms).
-Return the scallops to the pan, continue heating for a few minutes and then serve.
This is a beautiful dish, which is important when you're watching what you eat, and really filling. We added couscous to the meal, ate smaller portions than we would have a week ago, but I don't think either of us felt deprived. Enjoy!

What does 200 calories look like?

Ever wonder what 200 calories of ketchup (catsup? catchup?) looks like? How about bell peppers? Or hot dogs? Or Smarties candies?

Moving along.............

Doing ok. Was able to get my 45 minute walk yesterday (Kath was along as well). Eating is going well. Not weighing myself until Saturday though. Any loss or gain at this point is most likely due water fluctuations.

Is it too late to sign up Gus?

Highlights of Day 3

1. Dumped smoothie over hair and shirt when attempting to shake out the last morsels.

2. Popped a button off my pants while bending over--always an esteem booster.

3. Weighed myself to find I am two pounds heavier than I was to start--sweet!

4. Tried to run, found I couldn't go nearly as long as I could on Monday, and nearly fell off the treadmill from a dizzy spell.

So...pretty much par for the course, diet wise. ;)Jen
Ben - nice suggestion on that site. I checked it out and they've really got some good info. Much better than the other ones I've seen. They give you the cold hard facts which is good, but rather sad.....
Ran at the gym tonight. Gotta say, I'm a little tired. I have a personal training appt tomorrow.
How is everyone else doing?

Tracking your food & exercise

Hi all,

If you are looking for a method of tracking your food & exercise, I have found www.sparkpeople.com to be really easy to use and helpful. It's free and will even give you calorie and work out recommendations based on your goals and timeframe. I was using the Weight Watchers online tools, but like this better and it will save me a bit of money each month. Thought I would pass it on!

Alas...I'm Bloggable

Hi All - sorry for the delay, but have not had good luck accessing the Blog site. Here's my entry from earlier today. Lookin' forward to the fun with y'all.

Allie

Hey fellow BLs, need to ask that you kindly pardon my gross deficiency in substantive blog content today. It's New Years and I rang it in big...finally arrived home at 4:00 this morning. Yep...feelin' fine and dandy today and exceptionally qualified for this Biggest Loser challenge!

Seriously though, that middle-aged metabolism nemesis ain’t discriminatin’, and the extra pounds are clinging tenaciously. My regular tennis times make for decent cardio-ex, but don’t do much for that ever-fraying elasticity in the love-handle region if ya know what I mean. Maya Angelou believes that her boobs are in a race to get to her knees. Personally that imagery alone more than motivates me to pony up, shed some pounds and start firming up all those squishy delts, pecs and obliques. I am READY to be the Biggest Loser. But, …I will miss those coveted comfort foods (in my case Milk Duds and PopyCock), sniff sniff.

Happy New Year everyone and looking forward to toughing this out together!

Allie

My food plan

Hi all,

I am using a combo of Body for Life, You: On a Diet and my own modifications. I am focusing on whole grains, protein, and good fats. I'm also working on getting my fruits, veggies & dairy in. Today's food looked like:

Breakfast: Kashi Go Lean and fresh berries
Lunch: Homemade broccoli soup (from the low-fat Moosewood cookbook) with lots of veggies
Dinner: Quesadilla made with fat free beans, peppers, chicken, and corn tortillas
Snack: Low fat, sugar free pudding for dairy and fruit
Lots of water!!

I am interested on what others are doing in terms of eating plans, so please feel free to share!

Food plans

To respond to Karen's questions about food plans: I may attend WW, since I, too, am a lifetime member. Last spring I was traveling too much to attend WW meetings, but I followed a 5-6 small meals/day plan and lost 20 lbs (and put six back on this fall ). Even tho' it wasn't WW, I actually really liked the plan and found it fairly easy to follow.

For today and this week at least, we're doing the "small meal" thing. I will buy a roasted chicken, skin it and shred the meat. I can eat off of that for breakfast (really, it's good) and lunch all week. In addition, I am going to make two soups from the You on a Diet book. They look good, and I know they will be filling. And then Bill and I will have what we lived on during WW: a small piece of fish or meat, and a lot of grilled veggies.

Jen and Col - way to go on the Greenlake run. Karen - two trips on the treadmill? You rock!

Karen-It is working!!

I just did my second 30 min. segment (twice in one day....: > ) on the "belt" and I almost broke a sweat!! We can do this........we can we can......we can do this....we can we can.....We can do this... we can we can!!!

It's already working!!

After talking to Col today about her run around Greenlake I was inspired to see if I could do it myself. I pushed myself past my scheduled 25-minute run and did Greenlake in 33 minutes without a walk break! Thank you, Collie for the inspiration!!!!

...And We're Off.....

Happy New Year, all. Bill and I just returned from an open house, where we managed to drink only water and have a few bites of cheese and smoked salmon. We are on our way.

I've exercised for the last three days and I 'm up to 18 crunches (remember, I started at 10). My stomach muscles are begging me to stop, but I am choosing to ignore them.

Good luck everyone. Here's to a healthy week!

Karen is here!!!

What can I say that hasn't been said?????? I, like the rest of ya, just want to lose some lbs and MAINTAIN it. I want to be in control of what I eat. I want to be able to walk past a box of milk duds or a platter full of cookies (any kind) and not even feel tempted. I hate the idea of food having power over me and it has been that way for a long time. I guess that is why, as a former Weight Watchers life time member, I've gained all but 2 of my 23 pounds that I lost. Crap!! (I don't know if you can swear on blogs, I had a stronger word than crap, but I don't want to get arrested) I remember how fantastic I felt when I had lost that 23 pounds and I want to go for it again. Exercising has just been "okay" with me, although I've had times in the past 5 years when I've really gotten into it and felt great!! Like the food, I did not maintain it.I know it is so important!! I do have my treadmil and I've already done 30 minutes today, on in incline (no slacker here), so I'm jumping in with both feet on this endeavour. I'm ready to rumble...........

A question to any of you fine folks, what eating plan are you following? The former WWers, are you going back to that or are you thinking of another program to follow? Hmmmm........just thinking. Karen

I am here!

This should be a fun and challenging contest! I am in it to improve my eating habits, lose some weight and to develop and maintain a healthy life style.

My fitness goal is to walk/run a 10k and to get at least 45 minutes of exercise daily.

I am committed to eating breakfast everyday which is a big deal for me since I have been basically living on lattes for too long! I also plan to give up alcohol M-F for the 3 month period and to give it up totally for the first 12 days!

Finally I hope to lose about 20 lbs or so by the end of March.

Best of Luck to everyone! It will be fun to watch us all progress throughout the contest.

Day One

Hoopie aka Kathy Thrailkill is a good friend of mine and a courageous woman for joining our little group.
Okay, I think we've heard from everyone except Karen & Allie. Karen, where are you? Probably at Whole Foods with my sister. The fact that those two can spend so much time watching cooking shows and shopping for food while on a diet amazes me! : )
I hit Greenlake today and made it around (yes, I took a breather or two). I ignored all the people who gave me "why doesn't she just walk?", "what is she doing?", "Oh my God, Bob! Look at that - I think its having a stroke!" and "that poor dog" looks. Yes, Roo was with me.
Good luck everyone!

Why Not?

Hello! When thinking about why I decided to join this contest my first response was "why not"? The cash prize appealed to my competitive nature, but the comraderie got me overall. It's always easier to get to the finish line if others are there cheering you on (or providing the competitive pressure). Like many of you I've done the diet yo-yo more than once. I recently lost a fair amount of weight which is slowly creeping back on and I've realized the real key to succes is in the exercise. The more you work-out the more you can eat (really!) and still be successful as long as you make decent food choices. My 12 week goal is a little random and involves completing -- 3 consecutive reps of a workout sequence that was given to me by a trainer and I've yet to get through it once.

About 6 years ago I did my first sprint triathlon. Don't worry, I finished nearly at the bottom of my age group and all but crawled to the finish line. The biggest motivator at the time was that I finished even though I wanted to quit at each transition. The slogan for this particular event was "When Was the Last Time You Did Something for the First Time?". It's kind of stuck with me ever since. Keep it in mind as you strive to reach you 12-week fitness goal. Good luck! Kathy T. (friend of Colleen)
